Pollen Patty Trivet Test August 2024

We tried the Pollen Patty Trivet for the 1st time last week. We put 2 - 4 x 6 Pollen Patties on the top frames of each hive. One patty we put on the trivet and one directly on the frames. Within 1 week, the patties directly on the frames had hive beetle larvae in each. And the patties that we put on the trivets did not have 1 larvae in any of them. Needless to say the Trivets actually do what they claim.

Key Features

  • Elevated Grid Design (4” x 6”): Accommodates up to ½ of a standard pollen patty.
  • Enhanced Access: Provides bees with access to both the top and bottom of the pollen patty for optimal feeding.
  • Beetle Deterrent: Enables bees to patrol all sides, preventing small hive beetles from hiding and reproducing.
  • Prevents Beetle Egg Laying: Stops beetles from laying eggs under the pollen patty.
  • Compatible with Feeding Shims: Works seamlessly with feeding shims.
  • Chemical-Free Beetle Control: Perfect for integrated pest management (IPM) systems.
  • Boosted Protection: Can be used alongside small hive beetle traps for maximum effectiveness.

Pollen patties are an excellent alternative when natural pollen is not available or for boosting brood rearing.

However, small hive beetles are also attracted to these patties, often laying eggs in the protected space between the patty and the frame, leading to spoilage by beetle larvae.

This Trivet from BeeSmart Designs offers a straightforward solution to this problem by raising the pollen patty above the frames on a narrow grid.

This setup eliminates hiding spots for beetles and allows bees to patrol the entire surface of the patty, ensuring it remains fresh and accessible.
